AI in Advocacy: Empowering Persuasion

Updated: Nov 17, 2025

AI is reshaping advocacy and public affairs, making communication more efficient—but can it truly persuade? In a recent discussion, Andras Baneth, an expert in communication and AI’s role in public affairs, spoke about the fine line between influence and manipulation in an AI-driven world.

Traditionally, successful advocacy required clarity, memorability, and cultural attunement. Now, AI tools can enhance these elements: analyzing speeches, summarizing key points, and even crafting arguments based on audience psychology. But does this mean AI can truly persuade?

One key challenge is the distinction between persuasion and manipulation. While influence allows individuals to make informed decisions, manipulation nudges them in ways they may not fully understand. As András Baneth put it, “The real question is: Are we being transparent about how we use AI to persuade, and does it serve an objective that both sides can subscribe to?”

Moreover, AI isn’t just something we consume but a tool we create with. As András Baneth noted, “AI is already shaping the way information is aimed at us, but advocacy professionals and content creators must decide how to ethically leverage its power—whether for good or not so good” as there is a minute line between good and bad, and so is between AI persuasion and AI manipulation.

This raises an important concern: AI introduces a new power imbalance in persuasion. When a politician, for example, seeks to influence, at least the interaction occurs on a level playing field. However, when AI is deployed strategically—analyzing behavioral patterns, customizing messages at scale, and reinforcing narratives—it introduces a layer of persuasion that individuals may not even recognize.

As AI tools become more sophisticated, society must ask: Are we equipped to protect ourselves from AI-driven influence that operates beneath our awareness?

AI can certainly make advocacy more efficient—turning hours of hearings or debates into digestible insights. However, true influence still depends on human factors—emotional intelligence, ethics, and trust. The key is using AI not to control narratives but to make them clearer, more engaging, and aligned with the values of the audience. As AI-driven persuasion continues to evolve, the challenge will be ensuring transparency and ethical integrity rather than just maximizing impact.
